Between 2010 and 2015, Little Spain: A Century of History and the research behind it were covered by newspapers, magazines, television and radio in Spain, the United States and Germany. Nineteen of those items are reproduced here, each on its own page, with the original newspaper or magazine page alongside it.
In Spain the coverage ran in the national press and in the regional papers of the provinces that sent most emigrants to New York. ABC carried the film twice on its opinion pages, written both times by José María Carrascal, for many years that paper’s correspondent in New York and a man who had eaten in the restaurants the film describes. El País ran it in the national edition in 2012 and again in the Catalonia edition in 2014. La Opinión A Coruña returned to it three times across four years, following the Galician thread in particular; El Diario Vasco followed the Basque one, through the Centro Vasco Americano. XL Semanal and Mujer Hoy, two of the largest weekend magazines in the country, each gave it a feature.
In the United States the film was reviewed by United Press International, where Rafael Bernal called it “a valuable addition to New York’s immigration history”, and by the art critic Donald Kuspit, whose review appeared in The Huffington Post in English and in El Cultural and La Voz Hispana de Nueva York in Spanish. Kuspit called the film “a kind of masterpiece”. The City University of New York interviewed the director for its programme Independent Sources.
On television and radio, Antena 3 broadcast an extended report on its Weekend News, and on esRadio’s Cowboys de Medianoche the Academy Award-winning director José Luis Garci discussed the film with Luis Herrero, Eduardo Torres Dulce and Luis Alberto de Cuenca. In Germany, CB Nachrichten published an interview with the director in 2011. The film was in the official selection of the Gijón International Film Festival in 2015 and won the Latin ACE Award of the Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York for Best Documentary.
