ABC — “El documental que narra la historia de ‘Little Spain’ ha sido premiado en EEUU”

José María Carrascal, ABC — 2 February 2015

On the back page of the national edition, ABC reported that the film had won the ACE Award for Best Documentary. Carrascal returned to the subject a month after his first column on it.

Carrascal sets out the history the film records: the Spanish Benevolent Society, founded on 14th Street in 1868, which insured its members against misfortune in a country whose social provision lagged far behind Europe’s, and which came to be called La Nacional. He names the church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, where mass, baptisms, first communions and weddings were held in Spanish and from which the processions went out — above all the feast of Santiago. And he records the loss of Casa Moneo, the ultramarinos where Spaniards in New York could buy every kind of Spanish article.

In the author’s words

“La historia de esta «Little Spain» en Nueva York que muestra en imágenes Arthur Balder, con testimonios vivos.”
