Libraries & Universities

For fifteen years Little Spain was available only under institutional licence. This is where it has been held, and why.

From its release, Little Spain: A Century of History was distributed under institutional licence — to academic libraries, college libraries and public library systems across the United States. It was not sold to individuals. For researchers and students, the only way to see the film was through an institution that held it.

That was a deliberate decision, and it is the reason the documentary has had the circulation it has had. The archive it contains — photographs and documents that exist in no other film and are not published anywhere — made it a primary source rather than a general-audience documentary, and it was placed where primary sources belong.

Established study material

The film is used as study material in university and college departments of History, Spanish and Iberian Studies, Latin American and Latino Studies, Immigration and Ethnic Studies, and Modern Languages. It documents a community that is otherwise almost undocumented: Spanish — as distinct from Latin American — immigration to the United States, in the one neighbourhood where that community concentrated.

It has also been used in professional research. In 2016 the Spanish novelist María Dueñas purchased three copies of the film while researching her best-selling novel Las hijas del Capitán, set among the Spanish community of 1930s New York.

Institutions holding the film (selection)

Among the clients of Little Spain are some of the most important and respected universities in the world — to mention only a few among hundreds:

  • Columbia University, New York City
  • School of Visual Arts, New York City
  • Wellesley College
  • University of Massachusetts Amherst
  • Smith College
  • The College of New Jersey

The film is held by academic libraries, college libraries and public library systems across the United States.

Now available to individuals

The individual edition is available directly for the first time. It is the same film held by the institutions listed above, on DVD, at $30 plus $6 shipping — the same shipping rate to the United States and to Spain.

It is issued on physical disc only. The archive material it contains is copyrighted and is not published in any other form.
