El Cultural — “La Little Spain de Artur Balder”

Donald Kuspit, Ph.D., El Cultural — 28 July 2015

Spain’s leading cultural magazine published the American critic Donald Kuspit’s review of the film in Spanish translation. Kuspit is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Art History and Philosophy at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and one of the most important American critics of the post-war era.

The review was published in English by The Huffington Post, United States edition, and in Spanish by El Cultural and La Voz Hispana de Nueva York.

Kuspit’s argument is that a documentary need not be simplistically descriptive, and that editing is a creative activity — a matter of aesthetic as well as informational choices.

In the author’s words

“Little Spain is a kind of masterpiece, in that it masters its subject matter even as it shows Balder’s mastery of his medium.”
